Where The Sidewalk Ends

Juli contacted Janai about an art project in late 2014 that came into fruition in early 2015. Juli’s objective was to create imagery inspired by black and white street photographers of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Both Janai and Juli considerably preferred the aesthetic of the 1950’s to 1970’s, which were also huge influences on current fashion and therefore aided the decision to change direction slightly. It was difficult to know where to begin on a project of this scale; casting people of all ages, finding locations, sourcing fashion for each period and character and producing the shoot.

The first shoot day came about only 6 weeks later. Most of the pre-production was achieved just a few day prior – a sprint to the end! The shooting schedule was also hectic, achieving roughly ten shots in different locations per day.

Models wore a mixture of sourced vintage clothing, some of their own pieces and contemporary fashion pieces with the right ‘flavour’. Priscilla’s models came on board as the younger talent but the majority of our cast were friends, family and everyone in-between.

There are over fourty images in the body of work, just under half of which were exhibited recently at Becker Minty Art and have featured in an ever growing array of publications.
